Nothing says autumn to me quite like gingerbread cake and apple cider.

I was inspired today to try my hand at baking one for myself for a change, and it turned out pretty decently.

(I really should ask my mother for her recipe, hers is definitely better).

I know my mom ruined meatballs for me - I just don’t really like the taste of anyone else’s as much, including my own . She supposedly just follows her mother-in-law’s recipe, should remember to ask her what she does one of these days and figure out what I’m doing wrong.

Apple cider, ginger snaps, and the lawn going dormant for the winter are the three most enjoyable things about Fall for me. But ginger cake? Sign me up, that sounds amazing.

Whenever my mom comes to visit, she complains that she doesn’t need to cook anymore. (We try to spoil them rotten, and cook something special for them for whenever my parents visit, as they don’t visit very often).

I wouldn’t say food is getting worse, I’d say it’s getting... different.  My father in law learned to cook at a very young age, as his mother was apparently not a very good cook.  One year she did the Thanksgiving turkey, and gave everyone food poisoning.

My grandparents made a potato/bread stuffing for thanksgiving. The task of making it for all the aunts, uncles and cousins was passed to the most skilled Aunt. It just never got there, no fault of hers. Either the recipe wasn’t followed by my grandparents or my aunt couldn’t guess how much time and care they put into it. Still very good though.

Today t hat Aunt is someone’ s mother and someone’ s grandmother.

Its weird how seemingly simple foods can differ so greatly in taste just based on very subtle changes in ingredients and preparation. Mashed potatoes are the same way, I think. Easy to make, but some people just really nail them.

This is the recipe I followed tonight. It’s pretty good, but a bit more dry than I’m used to - probably due to ingredient ratios and baking time. When I get my mother’s recipe, I’ll be sure to share it.
